1A couple of things you might want to know before you charge ahead with your project
1. Your typical home broadband connection uses a leased IP address from your ISP. In other words, your computer is not at the same IP address all the time. So your web site will not be in the same place next week. That makes it really hard to build a following
2. Your contract with your ISP typically prohibits you from running a publicly accessible server. The penalties can be quite severe. Please check your contract first
3. Many ISPs block port 80. You may very well find that the world cannot access your server.
4. There is a lot to learn about setting up and hardening a server. Grabbing you families old XP box, loading Apache, opening up port 80 on your router and "letting her rip" is a sure way to add a new machine to someone’s botnet. The chances are they will be controlling your machine before you have gotten off the phone with your buddy telling him to try and access your web site.
This security issue is exactly why your ISP is so narrow minded about you setting up "servers"
If you want to develop a site and put it out there for the world to see, here are some better options
1. Decide on a domain name and register it through Yahoo or Google or whoever
2. Develop your web pages, then load them on the free web server space your ISP provides. Almost all of them provide this as a free service
3. Now go to Yahoo or whoever you set up your domain through and use the tools they provide to redirect all hits to your domain name to your web space
So when your buddy Frank wants to see your site (mycoolsite.com) he enters mycoolsite.com in his browser. Because you registered the site through Yahoo, the DNS servers know that mycoolsite.com is at IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (which is an address on Yahoo’s servers) They send the request there. Because you set it up in Yahoo’s tools, the request is redirected by Yahoo’s server to myfreewebspace@myISP.com. And your friend sees your web page.
Or for a few bucks more, you can do the entire site on Yahoo, Or Google, or Godaddy. Either way, it will work a whole lot better than what you are proposing
Good Luck

2You cannot use your computer as a server for everyone to see your webpage.
You have to go for a web hosting and place your website in the Server which is connected with the Internet worldwide Web.
Or have your own Server registering the same with the Internet Authority. Your computer (Server with 1000s of Giga Bytes or Terebytes capacity) would be offered a Unique IP (Internet Protocol) address. Then you can host millions of websites in your server, keeping a very small portion for your own website.
This would be a real hosting business.
