I always caution people against hosting their own sites. Most people don't realize the amount of work that needs to go into it.

Well, not until they wake up one morning and realize that their website was down all night! Or, until their web server crashes and they can't get it back up. Then they realize that they never had backups - let alone redundancy. Ouch!

At least a good hosting company has staff working 24/7. They should have alarms that sound whenever there's a problem. They should also have full redundancy on all hardware (i.e. web servers, routers, load balancers etc).

There are plenty of cheap but reliable hosting services out there. You've just got to find them.

For example ZappyHost:
http://www.zappyhost.com

Hosting plans are only around $5 but they're very reliable.

Let me tell you a little about my experience with web hosting companies over the years. At times you will come across deals that are almost too good to be true - cheap web hosting with amazing features! There are hosts that while offering cheap prices do back that up with excellent performance and service, but there are things to be noted:

There are a lot of potential questions you must ask yourself, whilst bearing in mind other peoples reviews, their reputation, and ultimately - the price. I personally use http://www.top15hosting.com to read web hosting reviews and see what web host is getting the best reputation as well as the bad, which helps me decide who to stay away from.

Your experience might be different but I have many complaints from PowWeb and Dot5Hosting. Those companies just took my money and provided me with bad customer support and my websites would always be down. Today I use Just Host for my web hosting and I’m very satisfied. As long as you do a little research before buying your web hosting you will be fine.

I would suggest getting a domain name and a hosting plan through godaddy or some other hosting solution. with godaddy you can easily setup a website with there "application" section.

If you don't want to have a monthly fee you can always setup something at your house. You can use No-IP.com to map your ip address to a domain through them (ex myhouse.no-ip.com). They have software that you can setup on your computer to update the ip address if it changes. You can then install a very simple web server software that you can get for free (ex bartware tiny webserver). Its pretty easy to setup.. Now, if you have a router you need to open Port 80 and map it to your computers local IP so the request will get to your computer.

First you need a web host supporting multimedia files. If nobody knows your site address they are not able to find your site. Don't also worry about search engines. Many webmasters kill themselves for years to be found by search enginse, but their attempts are all for nothing!

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only $6.95 a month. Their service is really perfect and uptime.

You can go there through the address below:
http://bluehost-service.atspace.com

Here I have copied and pasted its features from their website to view:

- Free Domain Forever
- 1500 Gigabyte Hosting Space
- 15000 GIGS of Transfer
- Host UNLIMITED Domains (Support All Domain Names)
- 2,500 POP/Imap Email Accounts
- SSH (Secure Shell), SSL, FTP, Stats
- CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQL
- 2000/2002 Front Page Extensions
- Free Site Builder
- 24/7 Superb/Responsive Sales/Support
- Free Search Engine Submission

They also offer "Free Site Builder" that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any creating website programs. (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get)

******IMPORTANT*******
* This service was awarded as the best Web Host 2008.
******************************

You can also try:
$ 3.95 /month: http://top3hosts.atspace.com/sl.htm

They provide all multimedia and image files.

Good Luck!
